…and other junk type magic.
Are you feeling cranky?
That takes on a different meaning at a funky store located in the alternative arts area on Historic Cherokee Street in St. Louis.
Cranky Yellow is a one-of-a-kind, hard to describe retail establishment that bills itself as “shop, gallery and performance space.” I asked the shop steward the origin of the name and with a shrug that implied he’d been asked many times before, he said the owner used to have a grouchy neighbor with jaundice. Ahh. Inspiration comes from unique sources.
Lucky for me because it’s a perfect offering for Mellow Yellow Monday.
The merchandise is hard to describe, but some of the treasures named on their web site include: paintings, prints, kooky films, folk-art, apparel, plushies, zines, vintage curiosities, carnival toys, animal skulls, found objects, trinkets, strange lamps, pop religious icons, little boxes, driftwood, cool antiques, bits of broken things, doll parts, 80's euphoria, masks, cute-crap, and other junk type magic!
See for yourself.
Original apparel, granny lap blankets and ginormous soft sculpture.
Object d'art and kookie stuff.
Crap glued on crap and yellow lambs.
Hostile self promotion.

We saw shops like these in the NYC a couple of years ago, but unfortunately, they wouldn't let us take pictures. So I guess on the neighbors are cranky in St. Lo.
That is MY kind of store. Seriously. I'm salivating.
That is one weird store, and some really funky yellow stuff.

My MellowYellow
What fun! There cannot be enough of such stores to satisfy my love of wackiness. I'll add that to my list of places I need to visit when I come to St Louis some day. All because of the introductions you've made!
OMG, what a great store to get lost in. If I EVER find myself in St. Louis, I will be making a raid on this place. What a trip. Oh, and loved that little roly poly clown.
very unique one, yeah.. cranky yellow :D
"Crap glued on crap." Yes! That says it all.
Thank you so much for spelling ginormous. I have a whole new word I can transfer from spoken to written now.
This is a very fun post.
I have to admit I feel the opposite way to your other readers, this shop would be my worse nightmare, yuck full of old smelly stuff!!
I think I would enjoy a visit to "cranky yellow"...

This is my kinda store. Vintage everything, attitude and lots of toys.
I've been on a work-induced blog hiatus, but I'm back and ready to rock again.
Ciao,
Lola xx
Fun post! The store looks like an interesting place to visit.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Hope you have a happy MYM...hard not to with all that yellow!
Oh, nice to see you are a friend of Best Friends Animal Society, too. :)
Very cool...a great reason to visit St Louis! I love this kind of store.
That could be a fun store to poke around in. I'd add to his crankiness, though, by not buying any of his crap - just gawking and laughing at it!
This is exactly my kind of shop. I love going to stores like these to purchase gifts for the extraordinary people in my life. I found a wind up nun for my friend the nun in just such a store.
This is exactly NOT my kind of shop but I love the name and that a store like this exists.
Now that's one FUNKY little dive! :)

Pretty darned funny! A great capture for Mellow Yellow.
This shop looks fantastic! Someday I will see it in person. I could plan and entire trip to St. Louis around this (I've been wanting to go there for such a long time anyway).
Thank you for your sweet comments about my wedding plans! It is so much fun sharing the details with everyone. My fiance is a very private person, so I'm not sure if he will let me post any pics of us at the wedding. Even so, I will definitely be sharing lots of other wedding photos & pictures of Cedar Key!
I like the last image...lol.
Way cool! And it is awesome that they let you take photos!
:^)
P.S. Word verification:
