Goodbye my friend

Today I had to make the hardest decision of my life. But the vet said it was time. As rotten as it was to hear, I trusted his advice – and my instincts – and said goodbye to my best friend for the last fifteen years.

The past ten months have been pretty rough. After living an absolute robust life, Murphy’s body just seemed to start failing him in bits and pieces. The sheen went from his coat. His eyes were clouded. And one by one the body functions declined.

I’m a little too sad to recount everything wonderful about him, but if you click HERE ("A special someone"), you can read a tribute I wrote last year when I realized the end was near.

Below are a few photos. I chose sparingly from the dozens and dozens I have stashed away in albums. My nickname for him was “Handsome”, but his beauty went beyond the visible. I hope he’s at peace and running through fields chasing rainbows.

********************************

The early days, just plucked from a rescued litter.

The sassy teen years, all legs and spunk.

The handsome man, sweet, feisty, loyal.

Goodbye my friend.

Very, very sorry for your loss. I was devastated when our boxer, Max, died. It was a very sad time. I'm sorry you have to go through it now, Annie

I'm deeply sorry for the loss of your dear friend Murphy. My thoughts are with you, my heart aches for you. I wish I could send virtual snuggles from my two pups to try and comfort you.

I am so sorry to hear about Murphy! He was a special dog - how lucky you two were to have each other. You gave him the best life and the best ending because you let him have his dignity (a wise Pyzahn told me last year that dignity is the best gift to give to your furry friends).

I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Murphy.

So sorry for your loss. He looks beautiful, and very well loved. It is difficult to let go of a beloved friend, but they know, and in their way they tell you. And their spirit stays with you always.

Oh, Pyzahn, my heart is breaking for you. Such a raw and gaping hole those beloved critters leave.

I wish I had words to soothe your sorrow, but I know it simply can't be done with words. Only time does that job, and grief has its own schedule we can do nothing to alter.

Hope you can Let loose those tears and grab your other pup for comfort. I'm going to light a candle for you this evening.

Sending soothing thoughts your way. And thanks for sharing your story and tribute.

As poet John Caddy says, "Shared pain shrinks. Shared jow grows."

Oh, No! I'm so very sorry Pyzahn. He was indeed a most handsome hunk of doggie. I'm sure you're very saddened tonight, and I hope like you, that he's running free in heaven.

Pyzahn, I am so sorry for your loss. I have made that decision in the past, too. The longest drive to the vet's I've ever taken.
I do hope that a sweet peace will envelop you.

Sorry for your loss. Animals teach us many things about life; and then they teach us what it feels like to experience the loss of a close friend.

So sorry and deepest condolences. Their lives are never long enough. In 2007 we had 4 cats, 2 passed away that year (one via "the hard decision") and now our 17 year old cat Henry is going through the falling apart stage (blindness, arthritis, plus asthsma and other issues).

Murphy looks like the best dog ever.

Huge hugs and sympathy. I feel for you. The last and in some ways the greatest good you can do for them is to ease their passing - something no wild animal can have. I feel sure his spirit is grateful and close to you, although I know this is a personal thing and everyone sees it differently.

How sad, Patrizia. Butterflies and rainbows are having a ball with him.

Murphy was one very handsome dog. The puppy photo is adorable, the sassy teen is exactly that and the caption below the "mature" Murphy pic made me well up.

Ciao dear friend, (for what it's worth) here's a big consolatory Italian hug.

What a gorgeous and sweet looking pup.

I am so sorry for your loss Sweetie. Our pets mean so much to us and it does hurt when we have to say good bye, even when we know it's best for them.

So sad. {hugs}

Having had to make the same decision for my sweet boxer Otis last year, almost to the day a year later that you had to let Murphy go, the tears just started flowing when I read your tribute. I so know so much how you feel. You know that I've been through surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, but haaving to make the decision for Otis and having him gone was much harder than all of those things. I miss him still, every single day. I believe that dogs will be with us in Heaven and I can't remember who said it, but if there are no dogs in Heaven, then I just want to go where they are. Murphy was indeed a handsome guy and a wonderful friend. I believe with all my heart that he is indeed running around very happily, hopefully he's found Otis by now and they'll remember being neighbors many years ago when Otis was a puppy. My thoughts are with you.
