High tide

Everyone of us is called upon, probably many times, to start a new life. A frightening diagnosis, a marriage, a move, loss of a job…And onward full tilt we go, pitched and wrecked and absurdly resolute, driven in spite of everything to make good on a new shore. To be hopeful, to embrace one possibility after another – that is surely the basic instinct…Crying out: High tide! Time to move out into the glorious debris. Time to take this life for what it is.

--Barbara Kingsolver, from High Tide in Tucson

I recently came across this quote from Barbara Kingsolver. It reminded me how much I love her writing. Whether it’s one of her perceptive essays or her beguiling novels, it’s easy to get lost in her words.

It’s officially summer, the unofficial season of reading. Grab a book. Tickle your mind. Nourish your soul. Savor the written word.

What’s on your reading list?

When one is retired, every season is a good season for reading. Presently reading Oxigen by Casella.

Ah, wonderful quote and perfect photo!

It's odd, but the only BK book I've read cover to cover was the Poisonwood Bible, and I found it transformative! It just rocked my notions about long-held beliefs.

As for summer reading, it's embarrassing to say, but I've found so much great content in blogs, I've been skimping on my book reading.

Help! I need a fantastic book to drag me away from my computer! A really great sci fi/fantasy with a couple of "shippers" would be ideal.

I'll be checking back for great ideas!

Thanks, Pyzahn

For the 5th time, I picked up The Hobbit. Every time I read this book, I find something new that I didn't recall the first time around. I'm still on chapter one where Bilbo finds himself the reluctant host of a posse of dwarves. I can't wait to see what happens next. Again.

I do so love Barbara Kingsolver's work. Perhaps an essay for tonight's insomnia. The quote is perfect--thanks!

And here it is officially WINTER and in our eyes freezing, it is so miserable. We are just not geared for winter in any way our homes have huge windows, no central heating and no wall or ceiling insulation. Brrrrr

I'm a SERIOUS summer reader- I just finished re-reading the Chronicles of Narnia, and I'm getting ready to start In Defense of Food. I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Kingsolver. If you haven't read it, I Highly recommend it. -e
